It is realizable that human is pattern-seeking animals.I realized that the original quote perhaps was trying to say that humans often think they have found a pattern when really their sample size was just too small.
So we have at least two different situations:
1.A pattern actually does exist but is given undue significance or incorrect interpretation.
2.A pattern is assumed to exist but actually does not if more careful statistics were kept.
So the quote is ambiguous.human brains are belief engines- kind of pattern recognition machines that connect the dots and create meaning out of the patterns that they see, observe and come across in nature. However these patterns may have meanings and well, may not have meanings at all.
Endowed with some meaning , understanding and recognition of these patterns , early Humans have learned and known , not to forget , made predictions about the environment that has aided their survival and reproduction. Since the past thousand of years ,this innate process of connecting dots , making connections and linking things have laid the foundation of Associative Learning and Associative Memory in our Cognitive mechanisms.
The brain has no restrictions on this pattern seeking, it sees patterns where there is almost no information to present one, and it sees patterns when there are not any. We see a man in the moon when we look toward the night sky, we see human faces in tortilla chips, the wood grain patterns on doors, and mountainous terrain. Similarly, we see patterns where none are present, when associating our life with outside influences.
In our real life, we absolutely noticed that we are seeking patterns when we observing or studying. In knowledge area of math, it is essential to seek the pattern of numbers, each equation has a pattern basis, the similarities among the similar and relative series of numbers. When we get the pattern, it will save a great amount of time to work out the same formulas. So we can use the one that already found to solve tons of mathematical questions as well as the primary one. Based on one formula, we could search other formulas in a fast speed. I think that is how math formed with patterns.
And so do language. Any language should have a basic rule to structure words. Human use the pattern which has similar meaning, but a bit of differences to record the similar words, such as the characteristic or property of a certain word. So it can changed by the characteristic when people use the word as verb ,adjective, or noun. It helps people to remember tons of words, the efficiency it brings is countless. If we do not have the pattern, how can we remember that much wonderful words?
As a result, human can not work even though live without patterns, it is the unchangeable thinking model in our minds deeply. It is like the train, if trains want to launch the route, it has to be on the track.
